LED Mask Irradiance and Dose: A Practical Buyer’s Guide

Wavelength gets most of the attention in LED-mask marketing, but irradiance and dose are also important when comparing light-therapy devices.

What is irradiance?

Irradiance describes optical power delivered over an area and is commonly expressed in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). It is a rate: how much optical power reaches a given area at a particular moment.

What is dose?

Dose, or radiant exposure, describes energy delivered over an area during a session and is commonly expressed in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²). In a simplified constant-output example, dose depends on irradiance multiplied by exposure time.

For example, if a device delivers a constant 40 mW/cm² for 10 minutes, the simplified calculation is 0.040 W/cm² × 600 seconds = 24 J/cm². Real-world delivery can differ because of device geometry, distance, pulsing, output variation, and measurement method.

Why more is not automatically better

Photobiomodulation should not be reduced to a “highest number wins” comparison. Wavelength, irradiance, exposure time, distance from the skin, treatment area, device design, and protocol all influence delivered light.

How to compare LED-mask specifications

  • Check whether irradiance is actually disclosed.
  • Look for the measurement conditions and distance.
  • Compare recommended session duration.
  • Confirm the wavelengths used in each mode.
  • Prefer transparent specifications over unsupported outcome claims.

Bottom line

Irradiance tells you the rate of light delivery; dose describes energy delivered over time. Both are more informative when evaluated together with wavelength, fit, coverage, and the manufacturer’s instructions.
